Oscar Schmidt was Stephen Curry in the 1980s and 1990s.

Basketball business in Brazil

NBA worked very well and created a basketball revolution in the country. the business around the league increased absurdly and the future is incredible. NBB’s, the national league was excellent worked very hard and helped in this consolidation, too.

There is also the movement of the streets, with the public courts and the 3×3 movement, connected with Hip Hop, which includes rap, street dance and graffiti.

Recent data from Kantar Ibope Media show a total of 58 million basketball fans in Brazil, almost three times more than in 2013.

If we still include children and teenagers, who are out of the survey we are talking about almost 70 million people, according to analysis by Sports Value.

The NBA in Brazil has managed to transform our market. The penetration of the league among young people here is greater than in the USA. Many generation Z teens prefer NBA than football.

Brazil is already the second NBA League Pass market in the world, behind only the U.S. and teams and league’s shirts sales rose 67%. The NBA has 19 points of sale in the country, has already brought its NBA House and will soon have a newest NBA Park in Gramado, 120 Km from the city of Porto Alegre.

In a recent interview to Forbes USA, NBA Senior Vice President Matt Brabants said, “Brazil is a priority market for the NBA with a passionate fan base that has grown by more than 50% in the last two years”

Basketball practice has low rates nowadays

Sports Value decided to go deep in studies and projects that reduce global and Brazilian sedentary lifestyle. Brazil is one of the most sedentary countries on the planet, with implications for numerous social and public health indicators.

The company is involved in projects in the fight against sedentary lifestyle, promotion of sports practice by the female public, social inclusion, and quality education through sport, using basketball as a modality.

Recently (before pandemic) and for a long time the basketball practice in Brazil represented 2% of the population. According to Google data with the pandemic the number of practitioners has doubled and currently basketball represent 4% of the Brazilians, in sports practice.

Google searches increased- During pandemic

Sports Value analysis identified that this index could reach 8% in few years, thanks to the media growth and the modality´s strengths today.

Brazil has a huge number of fans and it’s time to convert them into basketball assiduous practitioners.

Public sector is directly responsible

According to IBGE, only 1/3 of Brazilians have access to sports clubs to have a good sports practice. Lower social classes have enormous difficulty to access courts with minimal quality.

Sports practice in Brazil- By mensual income- US$

In Brazil, even the richest people have low sports practice rates  in comparison to the European countries. More than resources, it is necessary to have a recurring sports practice culture.

Sports Value has been following very closely this situation. The City of São Paulo Town Hall, with US$ 153 billion GDP, and the Government of the State of São Paulo, with US$ 420 billion GDP, didn’t´ work for the basketball courts conservation and soon the company will expand this analysis nationwide.

In Brazil we have courts and squares without hoops, many destroyed. There is no minimum maintenance and correct materials so that they do not suffer from the weather and vandalism. There is a lot of vandalism from people often who are sedentary, who have no idea of the importance of that space to the community.

In general the hoops are destroyed, and use incorrect materials.

Iron or acrylic are better than wood

A clear example of public dismay is the traditional public club, Edson Arantes do Nascimento Pelezão. A municipal and free to use club whose basketball courts are absolutely deteriorated and abandoned.

Another example is The Villa Lobos Park, a traditional 3×3 point in São Paulo, with courts in poor conditions.

A recent positive example is the Ibirapuera Park, with renovated courts by the private sector. Jordan Brand created the most desired São Paulo´s court.

This is the way for cities to have quality public sports spaces for the population.

The basketball community and new practitioners need very little to positively occupy public spaces.

Basketball is urban, street, culture, art  and healthy youngsters. But it needs hoops to be practiced.
