Professionalization has generated wealth for European football

Sports Value is finalizing a study demanded by a client on the European football economy in the last 25 years. With particular interest for the Portuguese market.

The analysis clearly shows that the change in European football legislation in the early 1990s was central to the wealth produced a few years later.

All European football markets that had changed the structure of their clubs required tax payments on time, safe stadiums and full business management of the clubs were the fastest growing.

The period in which the European Leagues grew most were exactly the few years after their change in club management.

According to Sports Value analysis, between 1997 and 2001 revenues grew 98% and spending on players’ salaries 121%.

It was the biggest growth and the whole historical series, with more than 20 years.
