Leagues and Teams with the Highest Matchday Revenues: Absolute Dominance of U.S. Leagues

Sports Value monitors the evolution of different revenue streams across global sports leagues and teams.

This recent analysis provides an in-depth look at matchday revenues from the major U.S. sports leagues and top football leagues worldwide.

The data was sourced from studies by Forbes, UEFA, and Sports Value’s database. Matchday revenues include ticket sales and other related income streams, such as membership, parking, and concessions.

Leagues with the Highest Matchday Revenues

U.S. leagues completely dominate the ranking, with MLB standing out, generating US$ 4.4 billion in gameday revenue in 2024. Baseball teams play 81 home games, making MLB the league with the highest stadium total attendance.

Second place goes to the NFL, despite each team playing only 8–9 home games during the regular season. This demonstrates that no league achieves the same efficiency as American football.

NBA and NHL also deserve mention, as they rank well ahead of European football leagues despite playing in arenas with smaller capacities than stadiums.

Teams in both leagues play approximately 41 home games per regular season, compared to fewer than 30 annual home games for European teams.

Undoubtedly, no one monetizes gameday as effectively as the North American sports market.

The Premier League is the top football league in matchday revenue, but the gap with MLS is small.

Teams with the Highest Matchday Revenues

The New York Yankees by far is the team generating the highest matchday revenue globally, with US$ 333 million in 2024. The second-ranked team is also from MLB—Los Angeles Dodgers, with US$ 277 million.

A standout in the NBA is the Golden State Warriors, whose new arena generates US$ 275 million annually, ranking third overall, despite a significantly smaller capacity than major MLB and NFL stadiums.

Real Madrid, with US$ 273 million in matchday revenues, ranks fourth and is the top football club. The recent inauguration of the new Santiago Bernabéu has significantly boosted these numbers.

Another notable European football club is PSG, which, despite playing in a smaller stadium, ranks as the second-highest European club in matchday revenue, thanks to the highest average ticket price in Europe.

Argentine Teams Dominate South America

In South America, giants River Plate and Boca Juniors lead the ranking, well ahead of Brazilian clubs.

For Argentine clubs, matchday income is by far their largest revenue source. In contrast, for Brazilian clubs, it ranks behind broadcasting rights, player transfers, and marketing revenues.

River Plate, with US$ 115 million in matchday revenue, surpasses major European clubs such as Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, and AC Milan.
